How to Prepare for Your First Meeting with a Lawyer

Your first meeting with a new lawyer is the initial step in progressing with your litigation. You will be able to provide details to the attorney and receive some essential guidance in your particular matter. A first meeting will go more smoothly when you prepare ahead of time. Here are some helpful tips for how to prepare for your first meeting with a lawyer.

Write an Overview of the Situation

Write a narrative that you can use to summarize the claim. You will want to review the details so when you speak to your attorney you will have a full and complete synopsis of the situation. Make sure that you do not leave out any important details. While you will not simply hand this to the lawyer, it will serve as your notes to use when you meet with your attorney.

Gather Information

As you prepare for your first meeting, you will want to gather as much information as possible. Bring along any relevant documents that pertain to the situation. Be sure to include any legal documents, such as motions or filings in the matter. The first meeting with your attorney will be more productive if you are able to provide information helpful for your lawyer. Do not worry if you do not have everything you need. Your lawyer will identify any additional details you can provide later.

Make Copies

Make copies of any documents you wish to leave with your lawyer. It is helpful to create a folder with copies of items you will leave with the lawyer. It is always advisable to keep original documents in your personal file,, or when giving originals, keep a copy for yourself. The more organized you are, the more smoothly your meeting will go.

Create a List of Questions

You may already have some questions regarding your potential litigation and it is a good idea to write them down ahead of time. Refer to your questions during the meeting so you will feel that you got the best results from the first meeting. Be prepared with a notebook and pen so you can take notes during the meeting, including new questions as they arise.

Arrive On Time

You will want to give yourself enough time to get to the office, park, and arrive on time. It is a good idea to plan to arrive ten to fifteen minutes early in case you run into a snag. Also, make certain to allow plenty of time for the meeting. While the initial meeting may be brief, there are times when it could extend longer than you anticipated. Make arrangements to allow you to remain in the meeting as long as necessary.

Bring a Friend

It can be beneficial to bring a friend or associate along with you to the meeting. It is helpful to have another pair of ears listening to the information. Allow your friend to take notes so you can listen to the attorney without disruption. It is also critical to turn off your cell phone during the meeting to prevent any distractions.
